Symptoms Of GERD

Are you suffering from GERD in Tucson, AZ? Dr. Miguel Arenas at the Mesquite Gastroenterology and Surgery Center can help you find relief.

What Is GERD?

The esophagus is a tube that connects your throat and your stomach. At the bottom of the esophagus is a valve, known as the lower esophageal sphincter. It is designed to open to allow food to pass into the stomach and then close to keep the food in.

For a variety of reasons, however, the sphincter does not always close properly. This allows stomach acid to travel back up into the throat and mouth.

Acid reflux is a common issue that many people suffer from on occasion. However, when it occurs consistently, which is usually considered to be more than twice a week for several weeks, it is likely a sign of GERD.

Symptoms of GERD

GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a digestive condition that is also known as chronic acid reflux. Chronic heartburn and even regurgitation are two of the most common symptoms, but there are several others, including the following:

  • Dry cough
  • Bad breath
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Hoarseness, especially in the morning
  • Tightness in the throat, making it feel like you’re choking
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Constantly feeling a lump in your throat
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Tooth enamel wearing away

Dr. Arenas at Mesquite Gastroenterology and Surgery Center can carry out the necessary testing and examination to determine whether you’re suffering from GERD or a different condition.
