Visiting A Gastroenterologist: What To Expect

Are you worried about some GI symptoms--gas, belly pain and more? You're scheduled to see your gastroenterologist, Dr. Miguel Arenas, in his Tuscon, AZ, office. What will happen during your consultation? A Mesquite Gastroenterology and Surgery Center, expect a friendly, thorough and informative visit centered on your unique GI health concerns.

What does your gastroenterologist do?

Dr. Arenas is an expert in the structure, function, chronic conditions and acute diseases of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract. He performs state of the art diagnostic tests and treatments, including screening colonoscopies for detection of colorectal cancers and Crohn's Disease, ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, diverticulitis, and other problems. Dr. Arenas communicates with primary care physicians and other health care providers to coordinate care and execute ongoing treatments for patients of all ages.

What can you expect at your appointment?

Your visit with your gastroenterologist in his Tuscon, AZ, office will be like seeing your primary care physician. Dr. Arenas will review your medical history and medications, take your vital signs and weight and ask you about your symptoms. Also, he will palpate, or feel, your abdomen.

When discussing your symptoms, tell him about pain and its location, gas, bloating, changes in bowel habits, bleeding or anything which concerns you. Be specific about the severity and location of your discomfort and what may increase or relieve it.

Your GI doctor may do an in-office ultrasound to visualize the pertinent areas of your gastrointestinal tracts. He may order blood work, other lab tests and state of the art imaging tests.

For instance, he may schedule an upper endoscopy, an imaging test which confirms GERD, or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This in-office exam involves the insertion of a lighted scope down your throat. As you relax under sedation, Dr. Arenas can view your upper GI tract with a small camera, finding areas of disease or malformation. With these findings, he can plan treatment going forward.
