Three Signs of GERD

Are you experiencing these symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)?

Heartburn is something that everyone will inevitably experience. But what happens when heartburn keeps happening to you? This could signify a chronic digestive condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can be severe if left untreated. Recognize the top signs of GERD, so you know when to turn to our gastroenterologist for treatment.

Heartburn

We’ve all experienced heartburn—that deep, burning sensation in the chest that often comes about from spicy foods; however if you have GERD, you probably deal with heartburn twice a week. While the occasional bout of heartburn isn’t typically anything to worry about, if you are dealing with it regularly, it’s time to turn to our team to find out if your heartburn could be GERD.

Regurgitation

Another warning sign of GERD is if you notice food or liquid traveling back up your throat, which can leave a burning, bitter, or acidic taste in your throat and mouth. Again, if this is something you experience regularly, it’s probably worth scheduling an appointment with a gastroenterologist who can determine whether or not you have GERD.

Lump-in-the-Throat Sensation

If you have GERD, especially if you’ve had it for a while, you may experience the sensation of a lump in the throat or feel as if food is stuck in the throat. As a result, you may need to clear your throat constantly. You may also develop persistent hoarseness or changes to your voice that may worsen first thing in the morning.

When Should I See a Gastroenterologist?

If you suspect that you might have GERD based on the symptoms above, you must turn to a gastroenterologist for an evaluation. Our gastroenterologist will diagnose GERD based on the symptoms you are experiencing, a physical examination with our gastroenterologist, and an endoscopy. You should also turn to our team for an evaluation if,

  • Your heartburn is frequent
  • Your heartburn increases in severity or frequency
  • Your heartburn isn’t responding to over-the-counter antacids
  • Your symptoms persist for more than two weeks

Worried that you may have GERD? If so, our gastroenterologist team is here to help. Call today to schedule an evaluation.
