What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

If you need a colonoscopy in Tucson, AZ, look no further than Mesquite Gastroenterology and Surgery Center, where Dr. Miguel Arenas and his team offer professional care in state-of-art facilities where you will feel comfortable and safe.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a routine gastroenterological procedure that involves inserting a long, flexible tube with a light and camera through the anus and rectum into the colon. This tube is called a colonoscope. A colonoscopy is used to screen for colorectal cancer and other conditions associated with the colon, and you should go for one every ten years once you turn 50. It is an outpatient procedure, and you will be admitted and released the same day unless there are complications.

Before the Colonoscopy

Before your colonoscopy, you must follow instructions to prepare yourself and your bowels for the procedure. This includes taking medication to clean out the bowels and not eating or drinking anything from a specific time the night before. You will also need to discuss any medication you take with your healthcare provider, especially any blood thinning medications.

On the morning of the colonoscopy, Tucson, AZ, residents will be admitted to the Mesquite Gastroenterology and Surgery Center, where Dr. Arenas and his team will attend to you.

During the Colonoscopy

In the procedure room, a drip will be put up, and sedation or anesthesia will be administered. You will lie on your side, and the doctor will insert the colonoscope. You may feel the tube going in if you have conscious sedation, but it should not be painful. Using air, your colon will be inflated to allow your gastroenterologist to see better.

During the procedure, Dr. Arenas will remove any polyps; if necessary, samples will be taken for biopsying. The material removed from your bowels will be sent to the lab for testing.

The entire process takes 30 to 60 minutes.

After the Colonoscopy

After the colonoscopy, you will be moved to a recovery area for monitoring to confirm that you are stable. You may experience mild discomfort, bloating, stomach cramps, and light bleeding. Once your doctor is happy with your condition, you will be released to go home and recover. You may return to your normal routine the following day.

If there are persistent or worsening symptoms after your colonoscopy, including severe pain and heavy bleeding, it is better to seek further medical consultation.
